Notarization via Notarytool is stuck "In Progress"

I seems like a pretty common issue but i'll make a post about it specifically for what i'm seeing. Its my first time notarizing an app so maybe its something in my config, but i'm not seeing any errors.

For simplicity I cloned, built and signed the sample Electron Forge app following the steps on https://www.electronforge.io/ "Getting Started". The build zip is 90MB so its not that large. My production application will be DMG, but even that is stuck (Maybe because the zips before it are currently stuck)

Trying to manually notarize via notarytool just hangs. I used xcrun notarytool submit <Package> --keychain-profile "NotaryProfile" --wait

Running xcrun notarytool history --keychain-profile "NotaryProfile" outputs the following.

Its been about 7 hours since my first attempt.

I tried to pull logs by calling xcrun notarytool log --keychain-profile "NotaryProfile" aa6e9df3-ef62-4058-8bcc-683f015b412a but it seems like non exist yet.

Submission log is not yet available or submissionId does not exist
  id: aa6e9df3-ef62-4058-8bcc-683f015b412a

Not sure whats going on, but its pretty far off from the time estimate of 5 - 45 minutes.

Any help is appreciated.

NotaryTool version is 1.0.0 (28)

Yeah, that’s not great. I’m going to check something at this end and then get back to you, probably tomorrow.

Please update this thread if anything changes at your end.

That’s expected. The log doesn’t exist until the request completes.

  • I checked the status again this morning and it has finished now. By package failed but for other reasons. Happy its not "In Progress" anymore.

  • Cool.

@eskimo I too am seeing this same behavior for a submission I sent in yesterday. It's also the first time I'm notarizing this app (or any app, for that matter).

First submission, 18 hours ago. It's still "In Progress": 00bb304b-7a36-4f6e-96ee-72031d92e943

I also sent it again this morning about an hour ago: 4d0421c4-9696-434f-865f-74d1b1670606

Were you able to find anything in your earlier investigation for jmalfara?

Here are my notarytool history results:

I am having the same issue trying to notarize a Electron app with a bundled binary using notarytool. Everything is signed properly, but the notarization status of every submission I've tried over the past two days have just been stuck on In Progress. I even tried submitting something else but this is also stuck on In Progress.

@0xAgony did you resolve this issue? I am seeing the same issue. It is as if the submission queue gets stuck and any subsequent submission is held in the "In Progress" state. I also don't see any way to cancel previous submissions which might unjam the queue using the "notarytool". In my case, my first submission has been stuck for about 30 hours.

Thanks for bringing this up - I am also encountering this issue. Waiting all day for notarization; I've progressively made my app smaller to try to get a response from the notarization process, but no luck.

Can also confirm this is happening to me. I am in the process of moving my projects to a mono-repo and handling codesigning/notarizing with Github Actions. The first time I ran the action it worked fine, but then failed as it started to notarize the second binary I have in my project. I tried to change the app-specific-password but that did not work. My history looks similar to yours: all "in progress" apart from the one at the start that worked fine.

It is happening to me too. I think signing is all good, i did not see any error, my app stuck in notarize for 14 hours. I also tried notarizing very simple app, they are all stuck in progress :( This is very bad for apple developer tools, i am completely stuck right now

Just want to +1 on the issue everyone here is having. I'm trying to notarize an app built with Tauri for the first time; the .dmg is 575.5 MB and everything is signed correctly as far as I can tell. It has been in progress for around 11 hours.

@eskimo, I see in the other thread you mention a spate of such reports. Any updates on workarounds other than "just wait for a couple of days"? Pretty unacceptable DX from Apple (not your fault obviously, but I do hope this issue has been escalated).

I too experience this same issue with a tiny app. Is this something that apple does automatically to "newbies"? The doc says 90+% of all apps get notarised in few minutes. Yet in this, and many other threads, I read about hours, days, weeks. And all are reports from first-time submitters.

This should be documented, if that is common standard practice.

Getting the same issue when trying to notarize my first app. I wanted to release it during the weekend but notarization is still stuck in "In Progress" after more than 1 day (31 hours). Definitely not a good experience after being almost forced to pay a 99€ subscription to do just that...

If it matters, my submission ID is e8becdfc-dd66-4e22-8d8c-f0f3c82cd2c8.

My app is very small. It's a macOS application (not a mobile app) and I uploaded it to Apple Notary Service 2 days ago and it's still "In Progress". Currently using Xcode 15.0.1 using the Notary Tool. Normally it takes about 30 seconds to notarize. What's going on?

I'm experiencing a similar issue where with a new Apple Developer account the first notarytool submit call was accepted within minutes, but all subsequent submissions have been "In Progress" for close to 24 hours now. Did notarization ultimately succeed for other folks who ran into this? @eskimo do you know of a workaround?

Sorry that I’ve not responded here sooner.

I recently added an Apple Recommended answer to this thread with more info about this issue.
